Hello and Welcome!
Here’s some information to get you all ready and excited…
Meet your host, Jenna Burne…
Hello! I’m so pleased you’re here! I’m Jenna, lover of Jesus, mother of two from Stroud in the UK and I am passionate about helping people like YOU encounter God through mixed media art journaling. Over a decade ago I discovered this art form and fell in love with it’s messy, fun and freeing style and its potential for deeply meaningful expression. Soon after I discovered it was also the perfect way for me to speak to God and for God to speak to me. And guess what?! Over the years I have met other people who have discovered that art journaling works as a form of prayer for them too! So I’m so excited to have gathered this group of beautiful people together to inspire you to give it a go.
Welcome
Welcome back for our third year of Encounters in Colour online Art Journaling Retreat! Watch this video for an explanation of what to expect from the week.
What is Mixed Media Art Journaling?
If you’re new to Mixed Media, start here! You’ll even get a sneak peak inside some of Jenna’s journals!
Basic Supply List
Each artist will give you a full list of the supplies they used in their project, but in the meantime, here’s a list of basic art journaling supplies you might want to gather together to prepare yourself for the week ahead….
FAQs
When will the lessons be available?
The first lesson will be available on the 8th June followed by 6 more lessons each day of the week. The lessons will be made available around 10am London time/BST.
How will I know the lessons are live?
You will receive an email each day telling you the next lesson is available. The link will also be posted in our facebook group.
When will the lessons stop being available?
All 7 lessons will be available until midnight BST on the 21st June. The facebook group will also be archived at this time. But consider upgrading for longer access.
Do I need to be on zoom / facebook /another app?
No, all the lessons are hosted here on my website. All you need is internet access.
I’ve never done art before- is this for me?
Yes absolutely! Art Journaling is not about making “perfect” or “pretty” art, it is about expressing yourself, playing and enjoying the process. All the lessons will teach you different techniques, just choose the ones that seem interesting and manageable to you. Why not just have a go- what have you got to lose?
What supplies will I need?
We encourage you to use what you have rather than go out and buy lots of new art materials (although that can be fun too LOL). Feel free to substitute any of the supplies for something similar. Each lesson has its own supply list but this basic kit would be useful.
Do I have to follow the lessons exactly?
No- you can do your own thing! Let the lessons inspire you and the Holy Spirit lead you… you might end up somewhere completely different… but that’s what it’s all about- having your own “encounter” with God.
What if I want access to the lessons for longer?
You can keep the lessons for a whole year with membership of the Encounters in Colour Library. Find out how to access it here.
Make your week feel like a reTREAT!
Make this a special time for you. I don’t know about you but life feels pretty relentless at times. Even Jesus had to take time out from the crowds and go off to a quiet place to breathe, reflect and pray. How can you make this week feel like a special time out with God?
Some suggestions to make the most of the week:
If possible, dedicate an inviting space in which to create - clear your desk, add a jam jar of flowers or a candle, pin up some of your favourite bible verses & art work to inspire you…
Set aside time - not just to watch but to create too. It’s amazing what you can get done in just 15 minutes a day- if you have longer, even better!
Make a little kit of art supplies - see basic supply list below but add in any supply that brings you joy when you use it!
Have a chat with your inner critic: can you hear a voice saying that you’re not creative? That you aren’t as good as everyone else, that you don’t belong here? You were created by your creator to BE creative. It’s ok to be a beginner. With a heart full of worship, everything you create is pleasing to the Lord!
Have a think about what you want to get out of the retreat- are there any specific issues you need to bring to God? Any guidance you need? Or healing? He is ready and willing to meet with you.
Encounters in Colour Song List
Our artists have put together a list of worship songs for you to journal to - some inspired by our lessons, others just great tunes to get creative to!
And don’t forget to join our private facebook group for this retreat! Come on over and introduce yourself…

Creative Warm Up
Here’s a fun tutorial to get you started. When I feel a bit overwhelmed, I like to work SMALL. Let’s make some altered playing cards together and write on our favourite scriptures and inspirational words… we can use these to encourage ourselves throughout the week!
You can download the printable of my favourite declarations & scriptures here:
