Meet Emily Henderson from Creative Prayer Journaling

Emily Henderson lives in Bristol (UK) with her husband Phil and their 3 lively kids. She loves leading art journaling sessions for her own and other local churches and has nearly finished her training to be a spiritual director.

Emily discovered mixed media art journaling through Jenna’s videos on YouTube and her in person retreats. Over the past five years it has become a real lifeline and such an important part of how she prays and spends time with God.

Emily is currently exploring how art journaling and creative prayer can link together with her work as a spiritual director. Spiritual direction is about accompanying others as they explore their faith and journey with God. It is listening with and for people and making space for them while asking the Holy Spirit to guide them on their journey.

Stacking
Stones

In Emily’s session…

“Today I wanted to make a marker to remember what God has been speaking to me about over the last few weeks. I find it is so easy to hear him speak through bible verses or words or pictures or sermons, worship songs and then I can totally forget a few days or weeks later!

I wanted to make a pile of pebbles to help me remember. Several times in the Old Testament (e.g.: Genesis 28, Joshua 4) the Israelites built piles of stones to help them remember what God had done and they worked as physical reminders of significant events; reminding the people of God’s faithfulness.

So I thought it would be a lovely thing to paint: a stack of stones to help us remember what God has done. It might be that you want to add special bible verses like I have. Or perhaps you want to write or draw things that you are thankful for on each stone. Or perhaps there are words or pictures you have received that you want to remember and you can write or draw those onto the pebbles. We learn so much from looking back and remembering what God has done and who he is and so having markers to remind us can really help when times get tough.”

Introduction

Meet Emily and hear how Art Journaling has helped her in her faith journey.

Stacking Stones

Emily suggests: “I always start with silence as I try to centre myself on Jesus and quieten my mind and my body. Then I write my thoughts and feelings as prayers sharing where I am and how I come to God. I want to be as honest as I can before him, confident that he is my heavenly Father and he knows it all already. Next I add collage and paint and often I look for pictures in magazines or newspapers that God uses to speak to me.”
